Down Under Update-010

Sarah's boss lent us her mighty Proton again and we headed to the city. Brisbane is 45 minutes away from Surfers, it very modern and very new-feels like Portland and Vancouver together. This trip really reminded us how much we love the city, a comfort was felt as soon as we hit the streets. We spent our limited time at The Gallery of Modern Art and had a really great time. The architecture was really well done both inside and out. There was a Matisse exhibit showcasing his sketches and a few of his more know pieces. He would do quick life drawings daily warm-ups, this exhibit was a collection of these doodles and sketches. Funny how when you are famous your napkin-sketches turn into gold. I was more into the only wall they had of his known cut paper motifs which I got in trouble snapping a photo of. Our favorite display was a surreal world of Japanese-Pop-Fantasy by Yayoi Kusama. She had 4 rooms of hyperreal environments of brightly painted fiberglass flowers, pokka dot orientated circle mirrors in a red room, blow up oblong floor to ceiling shapes that mazed your walking path, and our favorite room was a 100% white room and furniture where you were given a sticker sheet to apply colored circles wherever you desired. There was an all white piano in the room that children would bang on that created this chaotic soundtrack to a room of colored chaos while you tried to pick where your contribution would be. Brilliant!

We left town mid day to trek to Wellington Point. Here is where you can visit an island off the point that can only be accessed at low tide when a natural land bridge appears. Cool, right? We didn't get there early enough to see the water part which we plan to see but we did get there when it was all the way out. You walk on this yellow sand seabed that is very rough and on both sides of you is the ocean. You really do travel far out, it is crazy to think how deep you are away from the shore. The island itself is a wild life preserve and not much to write about besides strange trees that somehow grow in saltwater and millions of tiny shells. I love the sense of seclusion when at the farthest point of the island looking out into the bay.
